Madrid is Spain's capital and largest city, situated right in the centre of the country. It is a bustling metropolis, with an enormous variety of shops, restaurants, parks, monuments and museums. Madrid really does stay open 24 hours a day, leaving visitors to wonder if anyone ever sleeps! Amongst the wealth of attractions are:

El Prado: One of the world's finest art museums, including works by El Greco, Goya and Velázquez. A short distance form the Prado is the Casón del Buen Retiro, containing the Picasso masterpiece, ''El Guernica''

Royal Palace: An enormous 18th century palace whose 2800 rooms include tapestries, a royal clock collection and five Stradivarius violins.

Reina Sofia Museum: Excellent new museum housing contemporary art, with works from Miró, Picasso and Dali.

Parque del Buen Retiro: This beautiful park, filled with statues and fountains, makes a pleasant refuge from the busy city streets. Occasional exhibitions are held in the Crystal Palace, situated in the park, and in good weather it is possible to hire a boat to go rowing on the lake.
